National Health Service Corps (NHSC)/State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP)

The NHSC/SLRP was congressionally authorized in 1987 under Section 3381 of the U.S. Public Health Services Act, 42 U.S.C 254q.1.

• NHSC/SLRP increases the number of primary care physicians, dentists, dental hygienists; physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and mental health providers practicing in defined Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
• NHSC/SLRP authorizes repayment of educational loans to health professionals, who in turn must commit to practice in medically underserved areas in public or non-profit entities for a minimum of two years and maximum of four years.

Announcements!

• The NHSC/SLRP has recently recieved $2 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which will be used to fund additional loan repayment awards. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning December 14, 2009 through September 29, 2010 or until all of the funds are expended, whichever comes first.
